Agate Slices for Weddings
When Ali got in touch with me with an 'out of the ordinary' request, I knew it was going to be fun and challenging. She was looking for place cards for her Ibiza wedding, but instead of writing the names on paper, we'd be working with slices of agate stone.
As Ali is a very well organised bride, she was coming to me with loads of time for us to work out the process and test it out on a few sample slices. Key was deciding on the colour. Each slice would be gilded around the edge, so Ali was after gold calligraphy. At first glance, I wasn't sure that gold would stand out enough and so I included white calligraphy in the tests. Surprising me, gold won.
Once I was happy with finish of modern calligraphy using pointed pen on the very shiny (and sometimes cracked) surface, I got going with the place cards. Blue for boys, pink for girls. I'm stoked with the results and that I now have a much better understanding of working with this medium.
